NEW HORIZONS FARM PHILOSOPHY AND PURPOSE

New Horizons Farm was founded in 1990 in the United States to breed American Quarter Horses for use in Western Pleasure and on outrides. In 2001, due to the tragic death of an AQHA mare, Deborah found her first Appaloosa mare, I'm a Prissy Plaudit, who introduced Deborah to the Appaloosa breed, Reining, and Western Riding.

In 2004, New Horizons Farm was moved to South Africa and became a member of Stud Book with NHF Appaloosa Stud as the breeding affiliate through the Appaloosa Horse Breeders' Society of South Africa (AHBSSA). Peter imported the foundation herd consisting of two pregnant Appaloosa mares and a stud colt in 2004 and Deborah imported a pregnant mare in 2005. NHF Appaloosas have had outstanding success in the show ring and NHF bred or imported horses are found at the top Appaloosa studs in South Africa.

March, 2008, saw the return of New Horizons Farm to its foundation breed, the American Quarter Horse. NHF American Quarter Horse Stud is affiliated with Stud Book through the South African Quarter Horse Association (SAQHA). A buckskin AQHA mare with no Impressive bloodlines and verified HERDA N/N, was imported in July, 2008 and is being shown in Western Pleasure, Trail, and Halter. Deborah is working on her own skills in Reining.

The goal of New Horizons Farm is to produce American Quarter Horses that will excel in all Western disciplines, including Reining.

Visitors and cordially invited to visit New Horizons Farm to see the American Quarter Horses and to exchange ideas about Western disciplines.

WHO WE ARE - THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE HORSES

Deborah Ann New began riding in 1950 at 24 months of age and got her first pony for her 3rd birthday. Over the intervening years, Deborah has owned, bred, and ridden Arabians, American Quarter Horses, and Appaloosas while pursuing a successful, varied 28 year career with the US Government. Deborah currently writes for HQ Magazine on a regular basis and is an active member of several organizations here in South Africa.

Deborah and Peter W. Buchan met in 2001 and Peter began riding on a regular basis. He was especially impressed by the friendly dispositions and intelligence of Deborah’s Appaloosas and enjoyed riding the American Quarter Horses where Deborah stabled her mares.

Pieter W. W. Buchan was born and raised in Johannesburg. He lived in the United States for 10 years. Deborah Ann New Buchan is a US citizen who became a Permanent Resident of South Africa in March 2004. The Buchan’s were married 9 October 2004 at the Oppenheimer Memorial Chapel in Heckpoort, Northwest Province. It was the second marriage for both. Peter insisted on importing three Appaloosas so that Deborah could finally become a full time equestrian. Peter enjoys outrides and supporting Deborah in her equestrian activities.

Peter, Deborah, and the “critters” have settled into life on a small holding in De Rust.
